Typhoon Julian affects 38 Families in Baguio

The onslaught of Typhoon Julian in Baguio City left several landslide incidents and affected 38 families composed of 169 individuals based on the situational report submitted by the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) as of 7AM, October 1, 2024.

A total of eight landslide and eroded ripraps were monitored in barangays Irisan and Campo Filipino including a collapsed retaining wall at Purok 2 Upper Market and in Sitio Bilis, Sto. Tomas School Area on September 30 along with an incident of hanging boulders at Naguilian Road caused by heavy rains.

Another landslide occurred in Diplomat Road, Dominican Hill totally damaging a house and displacing five families. Of the five displaced families, one stayed inside the evacuation center while the other four stayed with their relatives in the city based on the report of the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO).

No flooding incident was monitored except for overflowing water along roads due to clogged drainages but were immediately addressed by the city responders from the City Engineering Office (CEO), Public Order and Safety Division (POSD) and the Baguio City Police Office (BCPO).

While the city is battered by heavy rains, a structural fire gutted a building along Bokawkan Road in Cresencia Village on September 30 which was immediately responded by personnel of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Baguio City Station together with BCPO Station 2, CDRRMO and Benguet Electric Cooperative (BENECO) personnel.

Some unscheduled power interruptions were also acted upon by Beneco in Balacbac Road, Sto. Tomas Proper as well as in Upper Magsaysay, Lower Magsaysay, AZCKO and Padre Zamora.

The City Environment and Parks Management Office (CEPMO) with other city responders tended to a total of four fallen and leaning trees in several areas in the city particularly in Suello Village, Aurora Hill, Lower Rock Quarry, Philippine Sports Commission at teachers Camp, and Baguio Convention Center area.

Numerous medical assistance and medical transport services were provided by the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) teams of the city government during the onslaught of typhoon Julian.

The CDRRMO report said there were no casualties reported as typhoon Julian exited the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).

Mayor Benjamin Magalong declared the Smart City Command Center (SC3) serving as the Emergency Operations Center of Baguio on red alert as a proactive measure. – JM Samidan
