On November 15, the 32nd IMPAKABSAT Cordillera Regional Trade Fair officially opened its doors, bringing the vibrant culture, artistry, and entrepreneurial spirit of the Cordillera region to the heart of Festival Mall in Alabang, Muntinlupa City. Running until November 24, the event showcases the very best products from the region’s six provinces—Ifugao, Mountain Province, Abra, Kalinga, Apayao, Benguet—and the city of Baguio.
The term IMPAKABSAT cleverly combines the region’s initials with the Ilocano word “kabsat” (brother or sister), symbolizing unity and shared pride among Cordillerans. More than just a name, it embodies the camaraderie and cultural richness of the highlands.
The trade fair’s roots trace back to 1991, a year after the devastating 1990 earthquake that shook Baguio and the surrounding provinces to their core. IMPAKABSAT was initially conceived as a platform to help the people of Cordillera—known as kakailyan—recover, rebuild, and showcase their creativity and resilience.
Over time, what began as a local trade fair blossomed into an annual celebration of Cordilleran craftsmanship and culture. It now stands as a hallmark of the region’s indigenous industries, tourism potential, and investment opportunities.
Under the tagline “Only the Best from the Cordilleras”, this year’s trade fair features 90 exhibitors offering an array of premium products. Attendees can expect:
• Ethnic novelty items and collectibles that tell stories of tradition and history.
• Handwoven textiles showcasing the intricate art of weaving passed down through generations.
• Bamboo crafts, furniture, and housewares blending functionality and artistry.
• Local delicacies that provide a taste of the Cordillera’s rich culinary heritage.
The event also hosts live demonstrations of traditional crafts such as woodcarving, weaving, and painting, giving visitors a firsthand glimpse into the skills and creativity of Cordilleran artisans.
What sets IMPAKABSAT apart is its celebration of Cordillera culture beyond commerce. Visitors can engage in activities that highlight the artistry and creativity of the region. The event fosters a deeper appreciation for the upland way of life while promoting local industries to a wider audience.
And if you’re looking for something extra, the fair offers free giveaways for purchases worth Php 3,000 or more—so there’s even more reason to indulge in local treasures!
IMPAKABSAT isn’t just a trade fair; it’s a celebration of a region’s identity and creativity, a testament to the resilience of its people, and an invitation to all Filipinos to support local artisans and entrepreneurs.
Until November 24, immerse yourself in the unique charm of the Cordilleras. Visit the Upper Ground Floor, Festival Mall, and experience firsthand the craftsmanship, culture, and creativity that make the Cordilleras truly exceptional. Tara na sa IMPAKABSAT 2024!
