BAGUIO CITY—The vibrant heart of the Cordilleras came alive yesterday, October 18, at Malcolm Square as the Department of Tourism – Cordillera Administrative Region (DOT-CAR) held the 3rd Cordillera Festival of Festivals. This annual event continues to celebrate the region’s shared identity, unity, and cultural richness, showcasing the unique traditions and heritage that make the Cordilleras stand out.
The festival brought together provincial and city delegations from all corners of the region, rekindling the Cordilleran spirit through a series of captivating cultural performances. Featured festivals included Abra’s Kawayan Festival, Apayao’s Say-am naya Apayao, Benguet’s Adivay Festival, Ifugao’s Kulpi ad Ifugao, Kalinga’s Bodong Festival, Mountain Province’s Lang-ay Festival, Tabuk City’s Kopyan chi Matagoan, and Baguio City’s iconic Panagbenga Festival, highlighted by the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Baguio’s “Baguio Ever After” Grand Float.
In a message delivered on behalf of DOT Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco, Undersecretary Myra Paz Valderrosa-Abubakar underscored the significance of these festivals, stating, “The festivals we are about to witness today are far more than mere spectacles; they are windows into the soul of the people who proudly call the Cordilleras home. These celebrations bring to life the deep-rooted traditions that continue to shape the cultural identity of this remarkable region.”
The message emphasized how these festivities not only showcase cultural pride but also provide a profound invitation to visitors, encouraging them to “Find Yourself in the Cordilleras.” Each province’s festival offers a unique glimpse into its heritage, whether through music, dance, or vibrant displays, yet all share a common thread of resilience, community, and a deep connection to nature.
Launched in 2022, the Cordillera Festival of Festivals aims to foster pride in the region’s distinct cultural identity. DOT-CAR Regional Director Jovita Ganongan highlighted the event’s significance, noting that the festivals capture the essence of the Cordillerans’ daily lives while celebrating their bond with one another and their reverence for nature.
“Each festival offers an unforgettable sensory experience, capturing the essence of its place of origins while celebrating the spirit of the Cordillera,” Ganongan remarked. “These festivities reflect the daily lives of the Cordillerans, sharing stories through dances, songs, and the rhythms of life—echoing our love for one another and our deep respect for Mother Nature.”
The event was graced by notable figures, including Baguio City Mayor Benjamin B. Magalong, Congressman Marquez O. Go (represented by Mrs. Sol Go), NCCA Chairman Victorino Mapa Manalo (represented by Chief Maricel C. Diaz), and NCIP-CAR Regional Director Roland P. Calde (represented by Chief Wilson Kalangeg).
